How To Limit Social Media Addiction

Recently, I did a research on social media addicts, believe me almost everyone is an addict of one app or the other. Yay or nay?

I remember how life used to be when we had no Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Instagram, Snapchat and the likes…

Even very few people had phones then, no frequent communication nor addictions to social media and then we were living our lives.

In 2001, the mobile system was introduced into the Nigerian market and society precisely on 6th August, 2001 in the third year of former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s first term.

Since then there has been innovations in the telecommunication world and Nigeria has been a better country in terms of communication.

There’s always a disadvantage we all know the rate of theft, hacking and all sort of online robbery in the country.

We do not have to dwell on disadvantage but innovate more ways on how the telecommunication system will be favorable to everyone.

Social media platforms can either add to you or take from you. It all depends on how you make use of it.

Take for instance, someone who buys data almost every week to browse, check his Facebook, twitter, like pictures on Instagram and the likes.. I see it has pleasure, because while doing that you feel cool, you feel so relaxed pressing your phone and surfing the net. if you know what I mean. (Meanwhile the data rate is not smiling)

Regardless of the social media distractions, I urge you to see it as a medium and a big platform for you to explore, learn, develop yourself into being a better person.

In everything you do, do with moderation. Don’t let social media dictate how you should live your life, don’t see someone’s life and think he or she is better than you on the Instagram just because they have the best pictures and more likes.

Everyone has challenges, they will let you see / know the best part of their life on social media, not the other way round. So no one has a perfect life. Be guided.

You should reduce your social media addiction and Invest your time, data and intellects with better things online. Do it with moderation.

Here’s a few tips on how to reduce your addiction to social media.

  • Self-discipline. This is the most important step because without self-discipline you can’t achieve all other steps.
  • Set a time limit. You could decide to come online only for three to four hours a day or from 4-8pm or any time limit you want to set for yourself. This has its disadvantage though. For example if you decide to come online for two hours and afterwards someone sends you an important message online, you could miss it.
  • Have a subscription limit. You can decide to subscribe to a weekend plan which allows you to browse only on weekends or you can go for a night plan which allows you to browse for a few hours at night.
  • Figure out what makes you Addicted to social media. I figured why so many people are addicted, it’s either due to boredom, laziness and stress. After a long day, all what could make some people feel relaxed is by checking their social media and they eventually get carried away with that waste their data on it. It’s best you figure out how else you can deal with whatever situation that makes you want to press your phone all day. Find alternative ways to respond to those itches.
  • Replace whatever makes you itch for your addiction to social media with something more beneficial. Replace the negative routine of checking your social media with a new routine. Train your brain the new routine and make you good use of it effectively.

That’s just a few! I hope you find this post helpful! I know I did!
